Cover image for The real Madeleine Pollard
The Breckinridge-Pollard scandal came to national attention in August 1893 when Madeleine Pollard sued Congressman Breckinridge for breach of promise, alleging that in their ten-year affair he had seduced her, stolen her youth and ruined her future prospects. The press leapt upon the story. Breckinridge had served in office for a decade and had a national reputation as a gifted orator. Rumors swirled that he was considered a strong candidate for even higher office. The newspapers, however, focused not on his political strengths but on his personal weakness.
