Gr 1-3-This set explores everything from art to engineering and also features vocabulary lists, extension activities, and "After Reading" suggestions that are tailored to each title. General "Before Reading" suggestions are the same in all of the books. The text is easy to follow and brief enough not to intimidate unfamiliar readers. Examples make connections to everyday life with patterns in quilts, algorithms for brushing teeth, or explaining that engineers design toys. Vocabulary words appear in bold print and are defined in a photo glossary. After an overview of the topic, readers are given the directions for a maker activity to try on their own, such as building a bridge out of marshmallows and toothpicks. VERDICT A kid-friendly introduction to STEAM topics, ideal for makerspaces.
