The third book in this contemporary fantasy series returns to the life of Tessa Andrews as she balances the magical and mundane worlds.
When her father disappeared into limbo years ago, Tessa's world fell apart. It took her discovery of magic for her to begin to put things back together. But she hasn't been able to restore her father from his ghostly half-existence—and he is fading fast.
Magic has a price, and Tessa is learning that it is both steep and deadly. The phoenix wizard who could train her has deserted Tessa. She has friends among the Iron dwarves and harpies, even a lesser demon, and the mysterious Malender with his sinister whip of thorns and fire. But she is still faced with a delicate balancing act.
Then her mother incurs the wrath of the magical world when she writes a dissertation exposing its reality. That is the final straw, as Magic fights back and an assassin accepts a contract on their lives. Tessa must learn to master her new powers as a sorceress, or everyone and everything she loves is doomed.

Hanover continues her Wayward Mages urban fantasy series with a suspenseful third installment (after The New Improved Sorceress). Tessa Andrews is new to the world of wizards, demons, and the supernatural when she is abandoned by her mentor, a phoenix wizard, and must forge ahead alone. She’s determined to save her father—who’s stuck in a ghostly form after a magical accident and hovering on the brink of fading away forever—but struggles to control her fledgling magical abilities. Meanwhile, she must work to keep the threads of her normal life and her magical life separate. This task becomes more difficult when her academic mother writes a dissertation about magic that threatens to expose the paranormal world. Now Tessa must summon all of her powers to keep from losing everything she holds dear. Hanover writes with panache, maintaining a delightful blend of humor and suspense throughout, and new readers and returning fans alike will be drawn in by Tessa’s magnetism and quick wit. This is a treat.

Tessa Andrews returns in the next novel in Hanover's urban fantasy series, addressing challenges that emerged in the previous book (The New Improved Sorceress, 2020) along with some new ones. Among other things, her best friend, Evelyn, has started dating her friend Hiram without realizing that he's an Iron Dwarf; her father's ghost seems to be fading in her basement; whatever's stalking their house seems to be killing neighborhood pets, and the maelstrom stone embedded in her left palm continues to randomly absorb other magical items. On top of that, her love interest, Carter, is busy with (magical) policing, and her mentor, Professor Brandard, hasn't reappeared in his new body since completing his phoenix ritual. And she still needs to declare her major. Hanover expertly juggles the mundane and supernatural as Tessa and her mother balance their normal responsibilities with Tessa's ongoing magical education. Readers can start the Wayward Mage series with The Late Great Wizard (2018), though this third book provides enough background to be read as a standalone novel.
