For 11 years, Serena Warren has been haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her twin sister, Caitlin. Unable to remember what happened that fateful evening, Serena has tried to move on with her life. Then she receives a call with the news that Caitlin's body has been found. Hoping to recover her lost memories, Serena travels to her grandparents' English estate, Minster Lovell, where Caitlin was last seen alive. Six centuries earlier, five-year-old Anne Neville, daughter of nobility, is chosen to wed Francis Lovell. The marriage will solidify allegiances between royal families; but as she grows, Anne must choose between her family and her new husband when the battle to overthrow the king begins. Cornick (The Forgotten Sister, 2020) seamlessly weaves together the stories of two young women, separated by centuries yet bound by their time at Minster Lovell. As the investigation of Caitlin's death unfolds, the legend of a centuries-old relic is explained. History lovers and mystery fans alike will delight in Cornick's latest suspenseful, romantic, paranormal tale.

Serena Warren is haunted by what she cannot remember: the details of the night her twin sister, Caitlin, seemingly vanished into thin air. The news that her sister's body has finally been recovered pulls Serena homeward to try to unravel the truth of that strange night. Cornick's dual-timeline novel also transports readers back to the Wars of the Roses, as Anne, a young noblewoman, sees her father and her husband imperiled by the period's ever-shifting loyalties and conspiracies. A mysterious object with incredible magical properties ties the two women's stories together in a web of momentous family secrets. Readers with basic knowledge of the Wars of the Roses will have little trouble predicting how Cornick's present-day plot connects to the past. VERDICT With likable characters and an intriguing supernatural element, this is an engaging, fast-paced read for fans of Philippa Gregory and of dual-timeline historical fiction. Cornick's books needn't be read in order, but a key figure from her previous novel The Forgotten Sister appears in this book as a secondary character.--Mara Bandy Fass, Champaign P.L., IL
