Zanetti’s tantalizing second Laurel Snow romantic thriller (after You Can Run) returns to the mountains of Washington State for another jam-packed tale of action, intrigue, and endearingly awkward social interactions. FBI agent Laurel is still riding the wave of success after closing a high-profile case when a new series of murders brings her back to her hometown and into the orbit of the brilliant but unhinged Abigail, her newly discovered half sister. As wary as Laurel is of getting involved, she can’t resist coming to the rescue when Abigail is threatened and emerges as a possible connection between the killer’s victims. Complicating the investigation is Laurel’s uncertain relationship with Fish and Wildlife captain Huck Rivers. The “will they/won’t they” question is fraught enough with more conventional couples, but Huck’s trust issues and Laurel’s lack of social awareness add another level of complexity to their dynamic. Zanetti excels at marrying solid plot and rapid pacing with distinctive characterization: the protagonists are well shaded and refreshing, while the supporting cast ably balances charm and quirk. FBI special agent Laurel Snow narrowly avoids serious injury when suspected serial killer Jason Abbott assaults her and escapes police custody. Law enforcement personnel, including Washington State Fish and Wildlife captain Huck Rivers, Laurel’s boyfriend and the father of her unborn child, search for Jason. But when blonde-haired women turn up murdered in a string of apparent serial killings in their rural Genesis Valley, Wash., community, law enforcement is unsure if Abbott is the killer or if someone else targeted the women. Huck himself becomes a suspect and is taken off the case because one of the deceased turns out to be his mother, who abandoned him as a baby and whom he never met. Laurel’s continued search for the killer is complicated by the forestalling of potential suspects, including Laurel’s estranged father, a local pastor who raped her mother, and Laurel’s half sister, Abigail Caine, a sociopath who Laurel believes might have helped Jason escape. Zanetti keeps the twists coming as the danger to Laurel intensifies.
