A Faithful and Constructive Conversation
March 1, 2023
Critical race theory, which focuses on how racism functions not only at the individual level but also in terms of legal and social policies and institutions, has been a source of significant controversy. Romero (dir., Brown Church Initiative, Fuller Theological Seminary) and Liou (national dir., theological formation for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA) draw on their personal experiences to discuss critical race theory as it relates to Christianity. Based on several decades of interdisciplinary research, they find critical race theory to be a helpful tool in illuminating how racism in the United States has been systemic and structural, privileging those who are white. Yet the authors also write as committed Christians wanting to integrate these insights into a theological framework or a Christian worldview. Thus, the chapters follow a biblical pattern, focusing on creation, falls, redemption, and consummation. They argue that Christianity can provide resources that support and contribute toward racial justice. VERDICT People interested in critical race theory and Christians concerned about faith integration and social justice will find this book to be very helpful.--John Jaeger
